While driving around Hampshire at the weekend (with the bikes on the back I may add) I got to wondering about the clarity, and indeed the meaning of the road signs we use today.
With this in mind I have a suggestion for this one:
I very rarely see a man (or woman) shovelling bitumen, or indeed anyone at the side of the road with or without an oversized umbrella.
What I do see, and what I think the sign should be warning us of is this:

Now I can see the point, but it really doesn’t give any indication of the severity of the issue, and on most occasions leaves the driver somewhat underwhelmed. Therefore I would suggest more use of something closer to the truth, like
